Dr. Tom Miller is the founder of Leaders Building Leaders and author of The Ten Indicators of High-Performing Charter Schools.

For more than two decades he has helped charter school leaders strengthen governance, develop leadership teams, and improve school performance.

His work has supported over 300 schools and 1,000 charter school leaders across the country, helping leaders improve results in academics, operations, finance, and board governance.

My Leadership Philosophy

I believe leadership is not about telling people what to do.

Leadership is about opening and building relationships.

When leaders build trust, clarity, and accountability inside their teams, performance improves across the entire organization.

That principle has guided my work with school leaders for more than twenty years.

The Turning Point That Changed My Leadership

Early in my career I learned a hard lesson:

If you want your life to change, you have to change first.

For nearly a decade I struggled with a gambling addiction that was slowly destroying my habits, my thinking, and my future.

Everything changed when I finally confronted the reality that the patterns I had created were leading me in the wrong direction.

Through discipline, accountability, and new habits, I rebuilt my life.

That experience shaped the way I think about leadership today.

Real change doesn’t happen through motivation alone.

It happens through intentional thinking, disciplined habits, and surrounding yourself with the right people.

Those lessons continue to influence how I help leaders grow today.

My Work in Charter School Leadership

After earning my Doctorate in Educational Leadership, I joined the North Carolina Office of Charter Schools as a consultant.

During that time I:

• Oversaw compliance for 40 operating charter schools
• Reviewed more than 300 charter school applications in my first 18 months
• Helped develop the state’s Ready to Open and Performance Framework process
• Worked directly with school founders and leadership teams

As charter schools expanded across North Carolina, I had a front-row seat to both the successes and the struggles that school leaders experience.

I saw firsthand that great schools don’t happen by accident.

They are built through intentional leadership, strong governance, and aligned teams.

Launching Leaders Building Leaders

In 2014, I made the decision to leave government service and start Leaders Building Leaders.

Since then, my team and I have worked alongside hundreds of school leaders across the country in person, thousands virtually, helping them solve complex leadership and organizational challenges.

Our work has included:

• Strategic planning for leadership teams
• Board governance training
• Leadership development programs
• Executive coaching for school leaders
• Charter school startup and expansion support

We have also helped schools secure over 12 million dollars in additional funding through strategic fundraising and grant development.

The Framework Behind Our Work

Much of our work is built around the Ten Indicators of High-Performing Charter Schools, a framework developed through years of research and hands-on experience working with charter schools.

The framework helps leaders strengthen the core areas that determine whether a school succeeds or struggles:

  • Mission and vision clarity

  • Leadership development

  • Academic systems

  • Parent Engagement
  • Operational excellence

  • Fiscal health

  • Effective governance

When these indicators are aligned, schools gain the clarity and structure they need to thrive.

What I Believe About Leadership

I believe most leaders genuinely want to improve their schools.

But leadership is demanding.

School leaders face pressure from boards, parents, staff, authorizers, and the community — often all at the same time.

That’s why strong leaders invest in their own growth and the growth of their teams.

Better leadership creates:

• stronger school culture
• better teacher retention
• improved academic outcomes
• healthier organizations

And ultimately, better opportunities for students.

Life Today

Today I continue to work with charter school leaders across the country through consulting, training programs, and leadership development initiatives.

I’m also the host of the Principal's Office Podcast, where I share leadership lessons and interview school leaders about the challenges they face and the strategies that help them succeed.

And personally, I’m grateful for the journey.

Today I celebrate over 20 years (since 2/12/06) without gambling, a reminder that meaningful change is always possible when we commit to growth.
